Short cuts – Nº 16 : Import options - importing specific paragraph styles

The import option that we will see today is very useful for project managers. Imagine you've received a huge file from a client, but are asked to translate only some parts of it. You might consider the option of copying the part to be translated to another file and later copying back the translation into the original file which might be risky or not possible at all for advanced file formats like Adobe FrameMaker, for example. The new Service Pack brings an excellent solution for this! You as a project manager can import the entire file in Transit, you just have to tell Transit what needs to be translated and Transit will take care of the rest for you.

Let's consider a Word file containing text formatted with different paragraph styles and you are asked to translate only text with a certain paragraph style. Load the entire file in Transit and click on the File type settings... button as shown in the figure below:

Mark the Ignore paragraph styles from the list option and click on the Edit button as shown in the above screenshot. If your client has specified the names of the paragraph styles (with which the text is formatted) not to be translated, then type those in the Paragraph styles list window shown in the figure below, and import the file. If you do not know the names of the paragraph styles, you have to import the file twice: during the first import, Transit creates a list of paragraph styles used in the file. When you import the file for the second time, mark the Ignore paragraph styles from the list | Edit and then click on the Apply from project... button as shown in the screenshot below:

Transit displays all the paragraph styles used in the file and now you can select the ones to be ignored. Now import the file again and you will see that Transit hides the text formatted with the specified paragraph styles.

You can save this list under the Global, Project, User or Customer scope and reuse it for projects with similar requirements.

Note: This option is available only for Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe InDesign, Quark XGate, Office, RTF and WordPerfect files.

In this way, you can work on the entire file but import only a part of it in Transit. Please do try out this new import option and let us know if you have any feedback or comments. We will be happy to answer your questions or write about any new topic you suggest. See you next week!

Hi, I am attempting to import a terminology file extension mtf under the dictionaries menu option for import terminology MARTIF/TBX. The import dialogue reports errors in a message window - when I choose to ignore errors the process is very slow and stops ~ 80% and proceeds very, very, very slow including program screen going blank or blinking on of. Any idea what I am doing wrong. This is a transit NXT sp9 - freelance pro version, I believe and running on windows 10 home 64 bit. Do you have any guidance or troubleshooting advice or documentation for me? Thank you. Best TK
